EXCLUSIVE: Nina Hughes has laid down the gauntlet for Ebanie Bridges on many occasions, yet the Essex based fighter is not confident a match is in the pipeline
When Ebanie Bridges makes her long awaited return to the boxing ring, WBA world bantamweight champion Nina Hughes will be watching, everything, closely.
Bridges is in San Francisco for her first IBF world bantamweight title fight since her victory over Shannon O’Connell in December last year. Avril Mathie’s recent injury has resulted in the Blonde Bomber being pitted against the dangerous Miyo Yoshida on the undercard of Devin Haney’s WBC world super lightweight title clash against Regis Prograis.
As his her fight week ritual, Bridges weighed in for her contest with the kind of lingerie that is enough to make Eddie Hearn look away in awkward embarrassment. Yet, Hughes, another active world champion who commands a significantly smaller online following than the Australian, is not interested in her frisky outfits or her razor sharp words – all she wants is Bridges’ championship.

"That's the fight I want, but she's not really shown any interest in it, so I don't think it's going to happen,” Hughes said, in an exclusive interview with Daily Star Sport , with the kind of reserved smiled suggesting she is not confident there will be a unification bout any time soon.
“I just want to be in the big fights that people want to see. And obviously, so do the promoters. The promoters don't want to promote you to fight people that people don't want to see.
“They want the big fights. So that's what I want to be in on the big show. Hopefully we can get a big fight next. Ebanie Bridges is obviously one, but she's fighting someone else and then I think she has a mandatory. So that was not going to happen next.”

"It was just a bit of banter and a bit of fun games. I was just trying to prove that I wanted to fight, and she didn't. And I think I did that. I just had a bit of a laugh and a bit of fun with social media. I did call her out, but she's still not fighting me.”
Considering the pair are both part of Matchroom, arranging this fight should be easier from the perspective of an outsider looking in. "I've made it quite clear that is the fight I want," she reiterated. "But they said they can't make her fight me and she's saying no interest in it."
Dina Thorslund recently unified the WBO and WBC belts by overcoming Yuliahn Luna Avila. A unified bout between Bridges and Hughes would seemingly pave the way for an undisputed clash against the Danish star.

When it comes to her in-ring prowess and relentless determination and power, Hughes is a huge admirer of Bridges. After-all, the Blonde Bomber has already demonstrated all of the above with her bloody, but close, defeat to Shannon Courtenay all the way back in 2021, as well as her slugfest victory against O’Connell.
Bridges formed a vicious rivalry with her fellow Aussie, who she went on to emphatically stop in the eighth round of their clash last December. O’Connell constantly criticised Bridges’ activities on OnlyFans as well as the bold, see-through lingerie outfit she wore at their weigh-in.
She said she would not want her 15-year-old daughter to look up to a person like Bridges. Considering Hughes’ views on some of Bridges antics, a similar rivalry could soon brew between the pair.
“What Ebanie Bridges does on OnlyFans is behind closed doors. They're for her subscribers. That's different,” Hughes added.
“I suppose at the weigh-ins, what she wore to the Shannon O'Connell weigh-in, would you want your daughters looking up to that? Yeah, I'd probably be in the same position (if she had a daughter).
"You want them to look up a role model, don't you? Not someone that earns their money from doing that. I think there's a time and a place for what she does.”
